18 Norui F.A. 15
The fellowship decided to rest for a few days in order to heal up the significant wounds they suffered during the fight with the wolves. During the downtime, the rangers, Elyanis and Galadhil, decided to look for herbs that could speed up the healing process and found several doses of Mirenna.
20 Norui F.A. 15
After a couple of days licking their wounds, they decided they were ready to start tracking the troll back to its lair. Elyanis managed to track it through some thick brush to a cave in the side of the mountain. Listening at the opening, Galadhil could hear the sound of the troll eating inside. Their first plan, led mainly by Dirdan and Banrim, was to draw the troll out of its cave and ambush it when it emerged. They set some traps at the cave opening as well.
Ardaer scouted ahead in the cave to see what they were up against. He found that the passage split a short way into the cave with one tunnel curving up to a chimney to the surface, and the other descending to a chamber with a hole in the floor. He could hear the troll moving around in the chamber below. He returned to the surface to report what he found and after some searching, they found the opening for the chimney and blocked it.
Ardaer went back into the cave to draw the troll out, but made some noise while descending into the lower chamber. He could hear the troll running away deeper into the cave. He returned to the surface and the fellowship decided to abandon their earlier plan and pursue the troll into the cave. Ardaer was the first to drop down into the chamber where he had heard the troll.
He found it full of corpses, both eaten and stored for later meals. The troll had exited through a hole in the ceiling in the southern portion of the chamber. After spending some time poking around the bodies, the fellowship decided to follow.
They made their way through a series of splits in the passageway, moving steadily downward, into a large chamber that stretched out beyond their torchlight. As they started into the cavern, they could hear a sound rushing towards them. They fell back to the entrance, as a wave of rats rushing out of the darkness rushed over them.
Thoughts on MERP
Scott continues to make improvements to the macros implementing MERP, significantly cutting down the amount of time spent consulting charts in combat. This allows the tactical nature of the RoleMaster descended system to come to the front without all of the lost time. Remember to contact me if you are interested in reaching out to him to make custom macros for you.
The wolf fight was the first time the characters took significant damage and it really let the MERP approach to healing shine. Characters recover concussion hits quickly, allowing them to get back to the adventure after a couple of days rest, despite two characters being knocked out during the wolf fight.
The inclusion of downtime activity like gathering herbs is another interesting aspect to MERP. There are not many of these in the book, but it will be easy to build on these examples to make my own downtime systems if I want to add more.
